Chapter three: summary

Summary
In the third chapter of the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry Gabrial comes to Jonas family. The pecularity on this boy is that he has pale eyeslike Jonas and not like the other people dark eyes.

In this chapter Lily thinks about her Assignment, she has the idea to be a Birthmother. Her own mother is against it becausethere is very little honor on this Assignment. Jonas is the opinion vthat Lily should be a Speaker. Because of this his thoughts wander to a situation in the past. He has thrown an apple to his freind Asher and the apple has changed in the air. Jonas could not eplain it and so he took the apple at home to examine it, although it is against the rules. But Jonas did not find anything.

Open questions:
How get the father Gabriel, although it is against the rules?
In which way the apple has changed?

  1. Interesting questions - I wondered about the changing of the apple, too. How can an apple change? as regards taste? form? function???

What about the pale eyes you describe? Do you really think that's important information? At least I have to agree it's a bit strange that all other people in the community apart from Jonas and Gabe have dark eyes.. Why is that??

  2. I think because Jonas is the maincharacter in this book the eyes are important. This guess is confirmed in chapter six. The Chief Elder explains this pale eye shows the Capacity to See Beyond, for example how the apple has changed. The apple can change on different ways, I belive, for example it can change its colour or into an other object. Also in many films things get faces or symbols on it. Because the apple flew as Jonas saw the change, I don´t think that the apple has change the taste.
